3 must do's for spring and summer!

Seasonal gardening tips - Spring
Spring = new beginnings in the garden! Use these tips to get your border, lawn and vegetable garden growing perfectly into spring.

  1. Soil preparation
Why: An airy, nutritious soil promotes root growth and water retention.
How: Remove weeds and stones, spit or use a garden fork to loosen the soil 20-25 cm deep. Then work 3-5 cm of compost or well-digested farmyard manure through the top layer.

  2. Pruning of bushes and roses
Why: Early pruning encourages vigorous, healthy shoots and richer flowering.
How: Prune away dead, weak and crossing branches before March/April, just before the sap starts flowing. Leave at least three healthy buds per branch.

  3. Lawn care
Why: After winter, the lawn is often compacted and bare.
How: Scarify with a rake or scarifier to remove moss and dead material. Then spread a spring fertiliser with a nitrogen-rich composition. Sow bare spots with lawn seed.

Seasonal gardening tips - Summer
Summer = maintenance & harvesting. With this advice, keep your garden healthy and don't spoil your crops with drought or disease.

  1. Deep watering in drought conditions
Why: High temperatures and sun require extra water; especially in the morning or evening prevents evaporation .Deep water (20-30 cm) encourages roots to grow deep, making your grass more resistant to heat and drought.
How: Measure when the top 5 cm feels dry and then give a slow, firm watering once or twice a week until the meter indicates that the soil is moist at 20-30 cm.

  2. Tightly trimming lawn edges
Why: Neatly separated edges prevent overgrowth in paths and borders and give your garden a professional look.
How: The Yardio TGT500W Grass trimmer is the perfect tool for this: set the grass trimmer to the desired edge height, hold the handle at a slight angle and walk in a calm, straight line along the edge so that the cord cuts the transition precisely.

  3. Controlling weeds quickly and effectively
Why: Early removal of weeds prevents seed setting and reduces competition for water and nutrients.
How: Get going immediately after a rain shower with the YARDIO WeedAway PRO Weed Brush, so that the soil is soft and the roots are easily loosened. Set the attachment at an angle, let the rotating wire or cutter head penetrate 8-10 cm below the base and pull up in one smooth motion to take the entire root ball with it. Sweep or blow away the loosened residue and seed pods to prevent spreading and check the spot regularly for new shoots.

Seasonal gardening tips spring

How do I remove weeds from my lawn in spring without damaging the blades of grass?

Use a weed cutter to grab the root low to the ground. Insert at an angle, clamp the handle against the base and rock out the weeds. This way, you only pull the weed root and the grass remains intact.

When do I start mowing my lawn in spring and how often should I do it?

Start as soon as the grass consistently grows above 6 cm, usually from late March/early April. Mowing can then be done once a week; with rapid growth in April, sometimes fortnightly.

At what height do I set the mowing setting for healthy spring growth?

In spring, keep the cutting height relatively high, at around 5-6 cm. This way, the grass retains extra moisture and the root can continue to expand healthily.

How do I tightly trim the edges of my lawn in spring?

Use a grass/edge trimmer with a sharp nylon cord. Walk slowly along the edge, hold the handle at a slight angle and let the trimmer do the work - that way you won't damage the edges.

When and how do I prune my hedge in spring for a nice shape?

Prune young hedges only after the first leaf freeze (mid-April). Work in one plane: first the sides from bottom to top, then the top. This will prevent bare spots in the hedge.

How do I safely cut away side branches of trees and shrubs in spring?

Remove dead or intersecting branches before April with sharp pruning tools. Cut branches up to 3 cm thick just above a bud or branching, at a 45° angle for smooth recovery.

How do I maintain my tools after the first spring mowing and pruning?

Clean blades and blades with water and mild soap, dry them and spray moving parts with garden oil. This will prevent rust and keep your trimmer or hedge trimmer smooth.

How do I check and maintain my lawnmower's blades in the pre-season?

First, disconnect the power or battery, lift the mower and inspect the blades for damage. Grind them flat and smooth with a whetstone or replace if there are deep notches.

How do I repair bare patches in my lawn after winter (scarifying)?

Scarify lightly with a scarifier rake to remove moss and dead grass. Sow the bare spots with a grass seed mixture and keep the soil moist until the grass is firm.

What safety measures do I take when doing spring work with pruning and mowing machines?

Wear sturdy gloves, eye protection and closed shoes. Check for loose cables or branches before use and always work in dry weather to avoid slipping.

Seasonal gardening tips summer

How do I control rapidly recurring weeds in borders and paths in summer?

Stick out weeds preferably after a rainstorm, then the roots will come along more easily. Work deep (at least 8 cm) with the weeder to catch seedlings and young roots as well.

How often should I mow my lawn during hot summer days?

In dry, warm periods, once a week is sufficient. During a growth spurt in June, you can mow twice a week, but never shorter than 4 cm to reduce stress on the grass.

What cutting height do I apply in drought conditions to keep my lawn healthy?

Set the mower to 6-7 cm; longer grass provides shade on the ground, reduces evaporation and encourages root growth in warm conditions.

How do I quickly and efficiently trim the edges of my lawn in summer?

Walk along the edge with a grass trimmer, keeping the cord slightly bent, just above the ground. For a tight finish, use an edge trimmer to loosen the blades of grass after trimming.

When and how do I prune my hedge in summer without blocking new shoots?

Perform a light summer pruning in June: trim only the outer growth, not too deeply into the old wood. This way, the hedge retains energy for new growth in autumn.

How do I cut side branches of fruit trees and shrubs in summer for better ventilation?

Remove crossing or overhanging branches with a branch cutter. Cut branches up to 2-3 cm thick just above a healthy bud to improve fruiting and air circulation.

How do I maintain my grass trimmer after intensive use in the heat?

Clean the spool holder of grass clippings and dust, clean the housing with a soft brush, and lightly lubricate moving parts with oil to reduce wear.

When do I sharpen my mower's blades in peak season for optimum cut quality?

Check every 4-6 weeks if the edges start to become blunt or show fraying. Grind them with a whetstone at the original angle to restore a clean cut of the grass.

How do I avoid burning freshly cut grass in the bright afternoon sun?

Preferably mow early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Let freshly cut grass dry once before the sun is high to avoid sunburn on the roots.

What safety measures are important in summer pruning and mowing?

Always wear safety glasses, hearing protection and closed shoes. Do not work during extreme heat (between 12 :00-16 :00), and take regular breaks in the shade with plenty of water.
